Phelps High School
Ervin Stepp graduated Phelps in 1980. Ervin was the first player from our part of the state to be elected the best basketball player in the Kentucky. Todd May of Virgie is the only other player from the region to have the same honor.
Where Ervin stands alone is his state and national records. Ervin is still the top scoring player in the history of Kentucky High School Basketball. He averaged in the mid-50 point range his junior year and went on to break his own state record his senior year averaging over 60 points a game. Ervin holds many other state records in basketball. Ervin is 2nd in the entire nation with his senior scoring average. It wasn't until the mid-90's that a kid from New York scored more than 60 points a game to top Ervin's record.
There will never be another Ervin Stepp!!!
